According to the thesaurus, both phrases have a similar meaning;
confirmed: ..., fast, steady, balanced; confirmed, valid; fiducial; immovable...
guaranteed: ..., assurance, warranty, guarantee, insurance, obligation; contract..., however in the hotel business there is a vast difference that you should be aware of.
A confirmed room often refers to what is called a “6pm” reservation and the hotel will release the reservation if the traveler hasn’t arrived by 6 pm. (These type of reservations actually play a big part in hotel’s overbooking strategies. See this article)
A guaranteed reservation is a reservation that you confirmed with a credit card number to guarantee that the room will be available to you, regardless of your arrival time. If you take a look at the quotation from the thesaurus above, it refers to a contract. Should the hotel overbook to a point where the room is not available to you, another room must be located for you, either at the same location or elsewhere.
Depending on your credit card company’s travel program or the hotel’s booking policy the hotel can be required to pay your first night at the other hotel, cab fare and a phone call home.
